Finding Bliss in a spa

Do you know the difference between aromatherapy oil and aroma oil? The latter is only oil that supplies sweet smelling effects, but not therapeutic or healing effects. This usually means that they have very low levels of active ingredients or do not contain the necessary extracts for healing.
Some spa owners are not even aware of the difference. What's worse is when they purchase the cheapest oils in the market and charge a premium price for their 'Aromatherapy' massage.
"There's a price war among distributors of spa products now, and the less informed spa owners will be at the losing end when they purchase products without understanding what they are buying," says Tan Loon Phock, Business Development Manager of Jejari Artistik Sdn Bhd, a spa products supplier.
The company started as a spa for more than a decade, but has now diverted their attention to spa supplies out of popular demand. "We have an edge over other suppliers in the sense that we were once spa owners before, so we know what spa owners need and want," says Tan. Their key brand is a line of spa products called Bliss, which is water-based and does not leave a sticky feeling on the customer or the masseur’s hands after a massage. Experienced masseurs usually prefer Bliss after trying out other oils as it also does not give them the risks of developing allergic reactions on their hands.
The high quality comes at a price, but Tan insists that price should not be a criterion when offering spa services. "Most spas are now more like massage parlours. It's a great shame, because a spa is supposed to be a pampering place where one spends almost an entire day relaxing her body, mind and spirit," laments Tan, who has seen a drop in demand for body scrubs and herbal compresses in the recent years. |
The secret to a good spa is actually in its services, reveals Tan. Many customers tend to try different spas until they find one they really like. So in order to have a successful spa, one must have more regular customers, who will naturally 'market' your spa for you via word-of-mouth.
Here are some additional secrets to spa success:
- Choose the right location with high traffic
- Your set-up must appeal to all the five senses of the customer
- Good therapists are a must to give the right touch
- Establish your own identity for a lasting impression
- Be prepared to fight competition in creative ways
- Packages should not be promoted aggressively but using a gentler approach
Says Tan, "Apart from products, we also offer training, product sourcing and consultancy for people who would like to operate a spa."
For the Beauty6 Expo at the Putra World Trade Centre, Jejari Artistik will be showcasing a new product, the Aromatherapy Insight Cards for intuitive aromatherapy. This is a set of Tarot Cards that reads what is the right aromatherapy oil for you at the time you pick a card.
The cards will reveal what your body needs most, whether relaxation, stimulation, stress relief, anxiety control or others. This will be sold to spa owners as an added value service for their customers, for them to relax prior to their treatment.
